Collected Works have successfully secured investment support from Artswork to embed Arts Award Discover accreditation into our annual Young City Reads initiative.
Arts Award offers young people an inspiring arts journey. Its unique qualification supports young people to develop as artists and art leaders by exploring and improving their creativity, leadership and communication skills. Open to anyone aged up to 25, Arts Award aim to help young people learn to work independently and help to prepare them for further education and employment.
Young City Reads is an annual ‘big read’ for primary school children across Brighton & Hove and beyond. The concept is simple: each year, between March and May, one book, by one author is selected for children and young people to read, explore, discuss and creatively engage with. By embedding Arts Award within this initiative, it will add great value to the project and encourage participation from a wider range of schools and their teachers.
Over time, Collected Works will create and distribute high-quality Arts Award based resources that encourage young people to engage with an arts activity such as shared reading, drama workshops or writing and illustration activities. Throughout the ten weeks of the project, young people can explore connections in the wider context, this can include the work of linked writers and creatives working during a similar period and sharing these findings and knowledge with other schools and each other.
Furthermore, Collected Works will be able to use Arts Award to strengthen their relationships with current partners Brighton & Hove Libraries, Brighton Dome & Festival Ltd and Root Experience, an arts organisation specialising in drama workshops. By working closely with our friends, we will be able to shape and develop how each stage of Young City Reads can be improved and to ensure activities follow and remain true to the Arts Award goals.
We are incredibly proud to have secured this investment and can’t wait to get started!
